VACUNAS CONTRA EL VIRUS DEL PAPILOMA HUMANO (VPH): UNA NUEVA
HERRAMIENTA PARA LA
PREVENCIÓN DEL CÁNCER CERVICOUTERINO La Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS) estima que
anualmente se producen más de 37.600 muertes por cáncer cervical en América
Latina y el Caribe. La mayoría de estos casos están ligados a la infección
genital por el virus del papiloma humano (VPH), cuya mayor tasa de incidencia
ocurre en general en mujeres entre los 16 y los 20 años. El cáncer cervical y su devastador impacto en la salud de
miles de mujeres en todo el mundo fue el tema central de la celebración del Día Internacional de la Mujer 2007 que,
bajo el eslogan “Que todas las niñas cuenten: el cáncer cervical es prevenible”, destacó el carácter prevenible
de esta enfermedad gracias a las nuevas vacunas existentes y otras en desarrollo avanzado, destinadas a prevenir la
infección del VPH y proteger la salud de la mujer, especialmente en los grupos más vulnerables. Más información en: Vacunas contra el virus del papiloma humano: Una
